HACKERverse® TV Recap: JP Bourget on Hacking, Startups, and Community

In case you missed it, last week’s episode of HACKERverse® TV featured a conversation with JP Bourget, better known in the hacking world as Punk Rock with two Ks, which is live and now online. JP’s story is anything but typical, blending curiosity, grit, and a relentless drive to experiment.

His first “hack” occurred at the age of eight, when he disassembled his Nintendo to see how it worked. That same curiosity eventually led him to RIT, a career in IT, and later to building a cybersecurity company that grew into one of the early players in the SOAR space. As JP put it, he quickly realized he didn’t just have a cybersecurity company, he was actually running a software company that served cybersecurity practitioners.

Over the course of six years, JP experienced the highs and lows of startup life, including raising money, building products, nearly running out of funds twice, and ultimately selling his company in 2020. He joked that he earned the merit badge of selling during COVID, and even walked away with a patent to his name.

But the real heart of the conversation was not just about tech. JP spoke passionately about community, mentorship, and inclusivity in the field of cybersecurity. From Defcon bike rides to mentoring founders in accelerator programs, he emphasized that hacking isn’t only about code. It is about taking systems and making them work in new, unintended ways, whether in tech, business, or life.
